CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Eryn

The smooth moonstone rim of the well was pleasantly cool under my fingertips. The milky waters were impossibly still and perfectly white, void of the reflection of the night sky above. Even Nef’s purple glow as the night wisp floated closer didn’t color its surface.

For a moment, it reminded me of the deeper waters of the ocean, of the creatures you never saw sliding between the liquid shadows. I wet my lips, my nerves settling as Nef brushed against my fingers. The little empath radiated support and confidence, and no small delight at seeing me again so soon. Then the night wisp’s thoughts turned downhearted.

“No, don’t be sad,” I murmured, cupping her in my palm and bringing her to my cheek. She was as soft as dandelion fluff. “Lox lives on in Larcen. They’re both happy.”

Nef’s mood brightened, sensing not only the reassurance in my words, but the little fluttering warmth in my heart. With more abruptness than I meant to, I set her back down on the moon well rim with a crisp, “There will be no talk of milkweed seed pod nurseries, thank you.”

“What’s this?” my father asked, returning from the sentry willow at the center of the valley. He’d been speaking with Haldir, the captain of the fleet guarding the night wisp valley. It would’ve been more accurate to call him a commander, since he coordinated the efforts of three fleets, but that title still belonged to Vespa.

Three fleets, eighteen ariels. Eighteen ariels not helping Vespa hunt down Shara and the Forsaken. I had mixed feelings about the allocation of resources, but while the courts had lifted my exile, I hadn’t accepted my place in the hierarchy yet and thus could say nothing. I’d proved that even a guardian of the Steorra bloodline wasn’t enough to protect the night wisps in the face of an invasion, but three fleets?

“Nothing,” I replied lightly. “Just catching up with an old friend.”

Nef nudged my fingers, wanting more details about the dark elf who set my heart thrumming. I blew a gentle wind in her direction, wafting her away on a spiral. Her giggle was as light as a chime.

“Are Haldir and the other ariels ready?” They were to form a protective formation over the entire valley, guarding the moon well and the night wisps as I attempted to reach the moon realm.

“Momentarily.”

I swirled away from the well at the heaviness in my father’s tone. “What is it?”

“While I’ve been away, the team inspecting the sabotaged star forge has determined the extent of the damage.”

“And?” The star forge was essential to the culture of my people; no other race manipulated celestial metals, and the loss of the last forge had been devastating. But if it could be salvaged…

“The forge’s core wasn’t extinguished—”

“That’s a good thing!”

“—it’s missing.”

My chest became painfully tight as my heart ceased to beat. I fought for a shred of hope. “Okay, well, there has to be another way to melt the metal, right?”

“What sun gold and celestial
